SEND and Inclusion

Welcome to the SEND and Inclusion Pages of Hazlemere CE School's website!

We are an inclusive school and we are very proud of our welcoming, supportive ethos and our skilled, highly trained teachers and support staff who work hard to make sure that we nurture every single child in our school to ensure they achieve their potential. Inclusion is the practice of making sure that everyone, regardless of their background, abilities, identity or circumstances, feels welcomed, valued, and able to participate fully.

We believe that all children should be equally valued in school. We strive to remove any barriers to learning which could hinder or exclude individual pupils with SEND. We believe all children should have the opportunity to flourish and feel safe. Through our motto of 'Nurture Every Talent', we support the development of the whole child, whilst valuing and celebrating the many and varied abilities displayed by all children.

Elklan Communication Friendly Settings (CFS) Programme

At Hazlemere Church of England Combined School, we are committed to creating an environment where every child can communicate confidently and successfully. As part of this commitment, we are working towards accreditation through Elklan’s Communication Friendly Settings (CFS) Programme—a nationally recognised training pathway that supports schools to develop high‑quality, inclusive practice.

The CFS Programme helps staff build a strong understanding of how speech, language and communication develop. This ensures that all children, including those with identified speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), receive the support they need to access learning and make good progress.

Through the programme, our whole team will receive training and resources that strengthen everyday communication practice. This includes creating language‑rich environments, modelling high‑quality talk, and using techniques that help children develop vocabulary, express themselves clearly and understand others. These strategies support pupils’ learning across the curriculum and contribute to positive behaviour, attitudes and personal development.

CFS takes a whole‑school approach, meaning communication‑friendly practices are embedded consistently across routines, lessons and shared spaces.

Working towards CFS accreditation also supports staff professional development. It encourages collaboration, builds expertise and ensures that our provision continues to evolve in line with the latest research. This contributes to strong leadership and an inclusive culture where every child is known, valued and supported to thrive.

Over the next year, we will be implementing the CFS approach across our school community. Our aim is to ensure that every child benefits from high‑quality communication support as part of their daily school experience, helping them to develop the essential language skills they need for learning, relationships and life. Watch this space as parent workshops to help you keep up to speed will follow next year.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Support.

At Hazlemere C of E we are lucky to have our own Nurture space called the Starlight room and a Nurture practitioner (Mrs Dymott). A Nurture group is a focused, short-term intervention for pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties which make it harder for them to learn in a mainstream class. Nurture groups have run in the UK for over 50 years and are now an international intervention.

We also use ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) style interventions to support individual students.

Mrs Brocklehurst is our Senior Mental Health Lead.

Should you have an immediate concern about your child's safety, please call the emergency services.

Pupil and Parent Surveys

Pupil's with SEND, Survey Analysis:

The pupil's voice survey for our pupils with SEND cohort evidences a highly positive culture of inclusion. Pupils report feeling safe, supported, and able to access learning through consistent adaptive teaching and strong relationships with trusted adults. The prevalence of positive responses across safety, happiness, and adult support demonstrates secure safeguarding and relational practice. Pupils articulate how they seek help, regulate, and maintain independence, reflecting embedded routines and inclusive pedagogy. While overall attitudes are highly positive, feedback highlights areas for refinement, including pacing of work and peer relationships. Leadership uses this intelligence to shape provision, ensuring SEND pupils remain central to decision-making.

⭐ Autumn Term SEND Parent Feedback – Summary & Insights: Key Highlights

This term, we invited all parents and carers of children on the SEND register to share their views about the support, communication and expectations in place at Hazlemere CE. We received 33 responses, representing families across Reception to Year 6. The feedback highlights a very strong level of confidence in our SEND provision.

1. Parents feel included in decision‑making

  • 91% of families said they are involved in decisions about their child’s plans and support.
  • Only 2 families indicated they did not yet feel fully involved.

This reflects our commitment to co‑production and partnership with parents.

2. Strong confidence in the support and targets in place

  • 94% of parents reported they are happy with their child’s targets and provision this term.
  • Several responses included multiple submissions for the same child, reinforcing the consistency of this view.

This shows that our personalised plans and interventions are understood, valued and seen as appropriate.

3. Strong engagement across year groups

Families responded from across all year groups, including Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2—showing broad trust and engagement in our SEND processes.

💬 What Parents Told Us

Overall, parents feel:

  • They are listened to.
  • Plans and targets are purposeful.
  • Their children are supported well.
  • The school maintains strong expectations for progress and independence.

A few responses highlighted areas to keep developing, such as:

  • Ensuring every family feels fully involved at every review point.
  • Communicating more clearly how high expectations look in practice.

📈 How We’ll Use This Feedback

Your feedback helps us to refine our SEND processes even further. Based on your responses, we will be:

  • Strengthening co‑production at SEND review meetings.
  • Continuing to raise aspirations for all learners, including the bottom 20% of readers.
  • Ensuring every family receives timely updates on progress and provision.

❤️ Thank You

We are grateful to every family that took the time to share their views. Your feedback is central to shaping an inclusive, ambitious learning experience for all children at Hazlemere C of E.

Childrens Mental Health Week 2026

Children’s Mental Health Week 2026 – This Is My Place

Children’s Mental Health Week took place from 9–15 February 2026, and this year’s theme, “This Is My Place,” encouraged pupils, families, schools and the wider community to think about how we can all help create environments where children feel a true sense of belonging.

At Hazlemere C of E, we marked the week with a range of meaningful and creative activities:

  • Whole-school assembly to launch the theme and explore what belonging means.
  • Child Resilience Questionnaire completed by all pupils, helping us understand how we can continue to support their wellbeing.
  • Island Creations – children designed their own “Islands of Belonging,” showcasing the people, places and activities that matter most to them.
  • Year 6 sound bath – children experienced a sound bath delivered by one of our amazing parents, then wrote about the journey they took.
  • Dress-to-Belong Day where pupils came dressed to represent the many different clubs, teams and communities they are part of — including, of course, belonging to our Hazlemere family.

We are incredibly proud of our pupils for raising £173 for Place2Be, supporting children and young people’s mental health across the UK.
