Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

Welcome to our class page.

Year 4 is taught by Mrs Woodstock. Miss Hussain covers the class on Fridays, allowing me time for planning and preparation. I am pleased to be assisted by Mrs Hibbert full-time, providing support to individuals and groups throughout the week.

If you have any concerns or questions, please arrange a meeting with me via the office, where I can give you a call or arrange a meeting with you. Additionally, I am available for a quick chat on the playground most days after school. Alternatively, you can write a message in your child’s reading diary and ask your child to show me.

Kind regards

Mrs Woodstock

Religious Education

During Autumn 1, we will be following a Gospel Unit of work which explores the question, ‘What kind of world did Jesus want?’ The children will be able to:

Identify this as part of a ‘Gospel’, which tells the story of the life and teaching of Jesus.

Make clear links between the calling of the first disciples and how Christians today try to follow Jesus and be ‘fishers of people’.

Offer suggestions about what Jesus’ actions towards the leper might mean for a Christian. Make simple links between Bible texts and the concept of ‘Gospel’ (good news).

Give examples of how Christians try to show love to all, including how members of the clergy follow Jesus’ teaching.

Make links between the Bible stories studied and the importance of love, and life in the world today, expressing some ideas of their own clearly.

As we approach the festive season, we will consider, ‘Does the Christmas narrative need Mary?’ The children will explore the role of Mary in Christian life and in the Christmas story in particular. They will know that Mary is considered to be the mother of Jesus and that God was his father, although Mary was married to Joseph; they will know the key events from Luke’s gospel that involve Mary; they will have thought about their significance to the Christmas narrative; they will be able to interpret some of the symbols usually connected with Mary; they will know that different denominations vary in their treatment of Mary and they will have considered their own response.

In addition, the Autumn Term also has a focus of Harvest and Advent.

English

This term our focused text was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and then linked our learning to our geographical topic, Rivers.

Children planned, wrote and edited their narrative writing.

Pupils were able to show their creativity by creating posters with the intent to persuade.

To interlink learning, pupils were given the fantastic opportunity to create brochures and look into the poem The River by Valerie Bloom, which was later used by pupils as inspiration to write their own poems.

Maths

In maths, we looked at mixed fractions.

As well as interpreting discrete and continuous data, we collected our own discrete data and presented this in bar charts.

Science

This term, pupils investigated the different properties of solids, liquids and gases. Children also looked at the process of melting, freezing, evaporating and condensing.

We also explored sound and vibration, where pupils had the opportunity to further strengthen their understanding by exploring varied instruments.

Geography

Geography this term entailed a rich topic of rivers.

Pupils were also able to explore the Rye where pupils looked at the Dyke, the Greenland and natural habitats for animals. Pupils were also able to explore how rivers were used by locals from the area.

In Art, we explored the work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, known for his Concentric Circles (1913) abstract art. Inspired by his work, we painted concentric circles onto paper plates, incorporated repeated patterns, and completed it by weaving.

In DT, we created electrical torches.
