Maths

Maths is taught daily at Hazlemere Church of England School.  Each day starts with an early morning maths skills session where children practice fluency in calculations and mental maths skills. This is followed by a 6-part maths lesson which is taught using a mastery approach.

Teachers plan their lessons following the Herts for Learning Essential Maths scheme. Teachers use the  HfL sequences, which are written as a spiral curriculum in which learning is built step by step, to plan engaging and challenging lessons for all.  By following this scheme, it ensures progression and coverage through the primary phase. Teachers also supplement learning activities with a wide range of resources, ensuring adequate support is given to all children.  Teachers ensure the learning environment is engaging, exciting and supports learning. Maths vocabulary is always displayed alongside appropriate visuals. Using mathematical language is integral to learning maths.

Alongside our daily maths lessons, Mastering Number is taught in EYFS, KS1 and KS2.  Mastering Number is a national programme that helps primary teachers develop pupils’ fluency and confidence with number sense and mental calculation through short, daily sessions focused on deep understanding of numbers.

At Hazlemere, we work closely with our local Maths Hub for sustained and quality CPD.

EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), maths is taught through a play-based, practical, and exploratory approach. Our aim is to build a strong foundation of mathematical understanding in a way that feels natural and engaging for young children.

EYFS maths is structured around two main strands:

  • Number: Counting, understanding numbers, simple addition and subtraction.
  • Numerical Patterns: Recognising patterns, comparing quantities, understanding shapes and measures.
