Governance

Our school governors are unpaid volunteers who hold the headteacher to account and ensure that the school is meeting its strategic objectives. Governors do not manage the operational day-to-day functions of a school, but are required to oversee its long-term development.

Who can be a school governor?

At Hazlemere Church of England Combined School and Nursery anyone can be a school governor, as long as you are over 18 and show an interest in the school, what is happening in education and the local community. You should also have enough time to attend governing body meetings and fully commit to the role.

Our governing board is made up of the current roles (with the number we have in brackets). You can find out more about all our governors here.

Foundation Diocesan Board of Education Governors (3)

Foundation governors appointed by the Diocesan Board of Education support the school’s Christian foundation and ensure that its religious character is preserved and developed. They help maintain the school’s vision and values in line with the Church of England, while working alongside other governors to promote high standards of education and the wellbeing of all pupils.

Foundation Parochial Church Council Governors (2)

Foundation governors appointed by the Parochial Church Council strengthen the close relationship between the school and the local church. They support the school’s Christian ethos, encourage links with the parish community and help ensure that the school reflects the values and mission of the church within its daily life and governance.

Parent Governors (2)

Parent governors are elected by other parents of children attending the school. They bring a valuable parental perspective to the governing body and help ensure that decisions reflect the views and experiences of families within the school community.

Staff Governors (2)

Staff governors include the headteacher and may also include a representative from the teaching staff. They provide insight into the day-to-day life of the school and support the governing body with professional knowledge of teaching, learning and school operations. The headteacher prepares and shares reports in advance of meetings to inform governors’ discussions and decisions.

Local Authority Governors (1)

Local authority governors are nominated by the local authority and appointed by the governing body. They bring wider experience and understanding of local education matters and help ensure that the governing body has the skills needed to support the school’s effectiveness and success.

Co-opted Governors (0)

Co-opted governors are appointed by the governing body because they have specific skills, knowledge or experience that can contribute to effective governance. They play an important role in strengthening the governing body and supporting informed decision-making.
